Sunday Stills – The Gentle Giants

Susan Zutautas's avatarSusan's Place

Today over at SecondWind Leisure Perspectives it’s Sunday Stills and this week the subject is dogs.

At the moment we don’t have a dog but I’m sure it won’t be too long before we welcome one into our family.

I thought I’d share a few photos of my Newfoundland dogs that I loved with all my heart.

First off we have Bruce who was my shadow, dancing partner, nursemaid whenever I was ill, and one of the best dogs I’ve ever had in my life.

Next, we have Maggie Magz who was my very first Newfoundland dog. Sadly we lost her last year in May at the age of 11.

Next, we have Maggie and Bruce enjoying a nice summers day.

Exeter Novel Prize

It’s always good to have an excuse to go to Exeter – to stay with family, to catch up with friends, to see what’s changed since I was a student, and to take this shot of the west front of the cathedral, which was something that apparently I never managed to do in the three years I lived in the city.

And it was very good to attend the awards ceremony for the Exeter Novel Prize, and to read out the first page of A Spoke In TheWheel. As always, I was struck by how happy everybody – shortlisted authors, guests, judges, and audience – was to be there. We were all genuinely pleased to have got on the shortlist, and pleased for the overall winner, Rebecca Kelly, who unfortunately wasn’t able to be present to collect her trophy.

After that, of course, there was the gentle…

Nancy Drew: Happy 89th Birthday Nancy Drew!

“Nancy Drew”

Happy 89th Birthday Nancy Drew!

card

I made this card for my granddaughter Ella’s 8th birthday!

The first Nancy Drew “book” appeared in print on April 28, 1930… just twenty-two days after my mother was born. Although the character of Nancy Drew was technically “born”… but, born at age sixteen… then later aged to 18 when they did revisions, and many years later, she regressed back to age eight in the Nancy Drew Clues Crew! We all wish we could go back and be that eight-year old girl again… but it seems only Nancy can accomplish that!

Nancy Drew turns 89 years old today… and just look at all she has accomplished during her lifetime!

Nancy Drew has appeared in:

  • 175 Mystery Book Stories:  (1930 -2003)
  • 1-56 were the classic original Nancy Drew Stories
  •  Nancy Drew classic books were revised (1959 -1979)
  • 6 Nancy Drew & The Hardy…

2019: Y… A to Z  Italian Famiglia Foods and Memories: Yes we made Pasta

I’m back for “Year 4” of the A to Z… April Challenge!

My first year of this challenge had me racking my brain for a writing topic… especially as I didn’t quite understand the process. But finally I came up with 2016:Southern Foods and Memories. They said write what you know… and being a girl born in the South… well this was what I knew.  2017: Conversations with Mama was a somewhat easy one for me as I’d journaled our conversations for years so I researched some of my favorite topics to write on.  2018: All About Nancy Drew has been my favorite topic so far, and I don’t know if I’ll ever come up with another to equal it. It literally had me researching every day for over six months… researching, reading and…

The Soothing Sea

Jem Croucher's avatarPoet's Corner

I have lost count the number
of poems I have written
about the sea in Sussex
as really, I am smitten
So, if I only wrote of water
would you think less of me?
for really, if the truth be told
it’s best beside the sea

I can sit here hour on hour
beside the soothing waves
and gaze out at its fathoms
on sultry summer days
For me it’s inspiration
of it I’ll never tire
It prompts my words and writing
and builds in me a fire
