1930 Stroll… Mama was born

The 1930’s saw the growth of what was known as “Shanty Towns”… aka squatter settlements created by the Great Depression, extreme political views, and what many considered an upside down world in times where bank robbers, like Bonnie and Clyde, were seen as heroes instead of villains.
Cost of Living in 1930… what things cost
- Cost of a gallon of gas was 10 cents: From 1930 to 1940, gas only changed “one cent” going to 11 cents. What a difference from today… where it jumps up overnight… often several times in a week. At this writing, (March 2019) the price of gas in Connecticut is $2.49 a gallon… $1.99 in Georgia… and $1.95 in Virginia. When we travel, we fill up before leaving, as Virginia is the first state for find for cheaper gas, then South Carolina is next. In the past…

Salton Sea Shorebirds~

Snowy Egret hunting for dinner,

plunges his beak,
and pulls out a fish!
Night Herons, White Faced Ibis, Snowy Egrets and Great White Herons, block my path!

424 different bird species have been identified at The Salton Sea, including this handsome Snowy Egret with striped stocking legs.
The placid Black Bellied Plover eats bugs in the sand,
while White Pelicans lumber off as I near.
They soon skid back,
flashing irked looks my way!
Great Blue Herons watch as if saying, “I’m a very big bird, you better be careful, if you come my way!”
Cheers to you from the wintering shorebirds at The Salton Sea~
Summer Wildlife Anza Borrego Desert State Park!
When the mercury rises at Anza Borrego State Park in the summertime, the tourists tend to leave, and the wildlife tend to come closer. Check out this Big Horn sheep photo my son-in-law, Sean Malone, took this morning on a hike with his i-phone. The sheep walked right up to him on the trail.
The Borrego Badlands present stunning eroded topography in the summer heat. They stretch on into the horizon and are loaded with fossils from ancient seas.
The Salton Sea is one of the world’s largest inland seas. It is also one of the lowest spots on earth at -227 below sea level. This Osprey was checking out the scene.

The sea is referred to as a “crown jewel of avian biodiversity.” 400 bird species are found here, along with 30% of the American population of White Pelicans.

Cheers to you from Borrego…

Bird on a Wire~

Ospreys aren’t usually avid people watchers.

But this guy was!

He couldn’t hide his cross-eyed curiosity about the strange human looking up at him.

Eventually, he resumed more raptor-like disdain,

and went about the serious business of people ignoral.

He focused on anything but the nosy photographer.

Finally, my presence outlived his patience,

and off he flew in a rapturous huff!
Cheers to you from the people-watching osprey~
Tiny Acts of Vandalism
Treading softly into the morning, trying not to wake anyone – a bowl of cherry yoghurt and far too many red currants is breakfast. Each astringent mouthful is like tasting them for the first time – the glowing fruits sourness belongs to itself alone. Red currants remind me of many places – berry picking in Tasmania, lying in my great aunt’s garden and eating them, sun warmed in bunches, watching Uncle Franz carefully layering them with caster sugar. But they belong to themselves – they whisper to me about forest clearings and allotment gardens, markets where they are piled like rubies, their presence atop delicate little cakes and other dainties. They belong to all these places, and not to me.
There is a hospital chapel in the buckled hills of Hochegg that is just a large room in the modern building. The chairs are padded plastic, the floor linoleum tiles…
