Here is a collection of photos from over the past few years taken at various spots around Newfoundland. Sadly I do not have any decent photos of Gros Morne National Park, but if you ever visit the province you will be amazed at the awesome vistas there, and everywhere around the island. Labrador is also beautiful. It is on my bucket list of places to see, especially the Torngat Mountains. I have seen photographs of the area and cannot wait to see them in person. At any rate I hope you will enjoy my offerings for today.

Beautiful Burgeo, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada
The community of Burgeo is located on Grandy Island on the Southwest coast of the island of Newfoundland and is a gorgeous spot to visit. It is a small town with a population of just 2000 people with a provincial park nearby where you can camp, swim, fish or walk the trails and gorgeous coastline. If you care to visit Francois, a small island where there are no cars, you can take a ferry from Burgeo to visit this small community. I did not get to visit Francois, but hope to one day. These photographs were taken in 2013 during our visit to Burgeo.
Scenic Western Newfoundland
“When sun rays crown thy pine-clad hills and summer spreads her hand….” – from Ode to Newfoundland, provincial anthem written by Governor Sir Cavendish Boyle, 1902 –
The province of Newfoundland and Labrador, like many regions of Canada, is known for its rugged beauty and vast stretches of wilderness. These photographs were taken along the western coast of the island of Newfoundland where the Long Range Mountains were formed over 1,200 million years ago. No matter where you drive along this coast you are sure to find hills and awesome ocean vistas. I hope you will enjoy my humble offerings.
Port au Port, NL
A few photos of the land of my birth – the Port au Port Peninsula in Newfoundland, Canada…. More to come
Port Harmon in Stephenville, NL
Going back in time to a few years ago at Port Harmon in Stephenville, Newfoundland; these photos were taken minutes before a rain storm. I love the beach there and I especially love the way the skies were painted with every hue of blue and grey. Bay St. George is a very deep bay on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland. Port Harmon was a once busy harbour and remains an important feature of the town. Stephenville grew substantially when the Americans built a base there during the Second World War. From time to time I will share a few photos of my native province. I hope you will enjoy them.
Little Port Harmon, Bay St. George, in Stephenville, NL, Canada
Little Port Harmon is a deep sea harbour in Stephenville, Newfoundland. It is one well known to fisher persons on the West coast of the island. Situated in the town of Stephenville it has been home to fishing vessels and cargo ships and is no stranger to factory freezer ships. Battle ships have also been spotted here as well as in ports and bays around the province. During the Second World War the Americans constructed an air strip in Stephenville and built a military base here. For many years “Harmon Day” was celebrated every summer. It continues to be an event that is held intermittently every few years.
According to the Stephenville Historical Society the white cliff known as Indian Head is a type of rock found in few places on earth.Anorthosite, the rock that makes up a large percentage of the cliff, is about a million years old and is among the…

Canadian Snowbirds Air Show
As many of you may know, I love to take photographs – it’s one of my favorite pastimes. A few years ago I was fortunate to see the Canadian Snowbirds put on a show in Stephenville, NL. It was a cold, rainy day in June, but the pilots did their utmost to make it a day for the crowds that came to see them. I thought you might like seeing a few of the photographs I managed to capture that day.

Black Magic Women: Terrifying Tales by Scary Sisters Edited by Sumiko Saulson
Before working with the Ladies of Horror Fiction I never really thought too deeply about my book shelves. Yes, I have international authors and I wrote a blog post about it. I lumped American writers together. Once we started planning and discussing the Ladies of Horror Fiction some things really came to light for me. I did not have many diverse horror authors. To say I was disappointed with myself is a understatement. LOHF received an author spotlight request from R.J. Joesph. Which lead me to Black Magic Women and a whole new set of writers to read.

Summary: Anthology of terrifying tales that range from steampunk to zombies
What I liked: If you have read my blog at all you will know that I read a lot of collections and anthologies. I love the mixture of stories. Vampires, werewolves and even a queen bee 🙂 People are neither completely…

Her Smile will Untether the Universe By Gwendolyn Kiste
Sometimes you read something that resonates with you so deeply that there aren’t even words that you can put together that will do it justice. You can’t describe the depths that a story or a book can speak to your soul. Her Smile will Untether the Universe will defiantly do that.

Summary: A collection of stories that will rip your heart out.
What I liked: Kiste’s writing is beautiful. Her use of imagery is exquiste and horrific at the same time. Kiste’s stories are multilayered and speak to you at different levels. There are horrors that Kiste uncovers within yourself with her writing and that is what makes the horror of the short stories so effective. The pacing of each story is perfect and there are no lulls between the stories. This is not a collection that you want to put down. The stories flow seamlessly between each other, complimenting…

The Rust Maidens By Gwendolyn Kiste
There are times when a book sweeps in and captures your heart and imagination. I was a kid in the 80s but I remember hearing about the rust belt and how all the factories where closing down and people where losing their jobs. There was so much uncertainty at this time. 38ish years later we see the result of the the factories closing. The skeletons of rusted hulks litter the landscape of the mid-west.
What I liked: I find after reading a few of Gwendolyn’s books I really enjoy the way that she writes. The pacing of the book is amazing and right on point. Kiste’s writing is both beautiful and horrific at the same time. I loved the concept of the story and Kiste does an amazing job at putting it together. The characters are well balanced and three dimensional. When I was reading I felt like I knew the…
