Top Ten Tuesday: New-to-Me Authors 2018

Erin Eliza's avatarUndercover Binge Reader

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. The topics are scheduled in advance which you can check out here.

Today’s topic is: New-to-Me Authors I Read In 2018

  1. Jennifer L. Armentrout – read her Lux series for the first time and became very obsessed, then I checked out the first two book in her romantic suspense de Vincent series
  2. Penelope Douglas – oh my god, this lady’s books. I’d probably read anything she writes and just hope it doesn’t make my head explode.  My favorites of her so far are Punk57 and Corrupt.
  3. Sarina Bowen – she does a great job with connecting to her readers and bloggers, her…

Tuesday Review – Roma (2018)

Murdocal's avatarYipee ki-yay, motherbooker

p15849821_v_v8_aa5_star_rating_system_5_stars It’s getting near to that time of the year when I madly try to watch all of the films nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. As I only just managed it last year, I’m trying to get ahead of the curve and watch the most likely candidates before the nominations are even out. Luckily, they’re all films that I want to watch anyway so, even if none of them end up with a nomination to their name, I won’t have watched them for nothing. First film on the agenda is one of the most talked about film of the end of 2018. I was too busy watching shitty Christmas films to watch Roma when it was first released on Netflix. So, I made it my mission to watch it at the beginning of January. I’d only ever read absolutely positive things about it so, it’s fair to say, my expectations…

Our Best and Worst Books of 2018

That time of the year, full of year end lists and reading recaps. You can see our best and worst of last year here. Here’s what we thought for this year:

OUR BESTS

Taynement:

18

I had to beg Leggy to let me cheat. I have been mulling and mulling all year trying to pick which I liked better of these two and I just can’t pick one over the other. Considering my favorite book last year was Backman’s Beartown, I guess you could say I am a fan girl. You can see what we though of American Marriage, here and Us Against You, here. That being said, I am such a stingy bitch. I don’t think I gave a single book (not even my faves) 5 stars this year.

Other favorites:

  • Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou
  • Little Fires Everywhere by…

We ChitChat: “My Sister, the Serial Killer” by Oyinkan Braithwaite

twonightstands's avatarTwoNightStands

Image result for my sister the serial killer“The most loving parents and relatives commit murder with smiles on their faces. They force us to destroy the person we really are: a subtle kind of murder”

Taynement: I felt like there was a stretch of time last year when I saw this title everywhere. The Nigerian name caught my eye and I added it to my TBR list.

Leggy: So, what was your first impression of the title?

Taynement: I didn’t think anything of it per se. I think I just assumed it’ll be a book similar to Helen Oyeyemi’s style. Which is funny because I have only successfully finished one Helen Oyeyemi book (I generally find her tedious), so it’s interesting that I still wanted to read this. I’m glad it’s nothing like her work though.

Leggy: It was definitely the title that caught my eye and I thought it would be fantasy or some kind of…

In an Absent Dream

Title: In An Absent Dream

Author: Seanan McGuire

Published by: Tor.com

Publishing date: January 8th 2019

Genre: YA Fantasy

Pages: 187

This is the story of a very serious young girl who would rather study and dream than become a respectable housewife and live up to the expectations of the world around her. As well she should.

When she finds a doorway to a world founded on logic and reason, riddles and lies, she thinks she’s found her paradise. Alas, everything costs at the goblin market, and when her time there is drawing to a close, she makes the kind of bargain that never plays out well.

For anyone . . .

Goodreads|Amazon

In An Absent Dream has become my favorite book in the Wayward Children series. I found the Goblin Market to be a more fascinating and intricate world than the worlds in other books…

Review: Everless (Everless #1) by Sara Holland

Ezzydesu's avatarServillas Speaks

“Maybe I am a mystery— a secret— that needs unravelling…”

★★★★★

I won this stunning hardback along with a Bloodleaf ARC in a giveaway by Sara Holland herself. Best thing is, she signed this copy of Everless to me! And after reading it, I can tell you, the story is even more beautiful than the cover, I ordered Evermore shortly after finishing this.
I want to start with how much I loved this book. I picked this up and just read all the way through in two days. I was so enchanted by the story that I just didn’t want to put it down at all. And honestly, I was surprised by this book. It was very different from my expectations and I was happily surprised.

One of the main things in this book is that time is a currency. I have seen a sci-fi movie with the same kind…
