Bamboozled

sgeoil's avatarSgeoil

“Now that’s some woman”
you exclaim
I look,
shapely curves
smooth velvet skin
curls in place
wrinkle free
ironed on pages
of some magazine,
bamboozled you are
by a million dollar industry.
“Ain’t I a Woman”
I exclaim,
a little less shapely
no time to preen
days of working
for the man
up all night
nursing a sick child
juggling laundry-meals
living life in the trenches
not on the glamour pages.

Welcome back to the #steampunk riverboat, my chuckaboos!

As you know, I’m re-writing a nearly finished novel, The Delta Pearl, for this serial.  That has resulted in a few changes, such as the heroine, Émeraude, becoming several years younger.  Now both she and one of the passengers (Victor Elam — you met him last time) are in their teens.  Although Victor is a little older than Émeraude.

A story set on a riverboat will have a lot of characters.  Between the passengers and the crew, that’s unavoidable, at least when I’m telling the tale.  I’m trying to make it easier for you to keep track of all these people by how I name them.  Throughout this week, I’ve done a lot of work, renaming the passengers.  Many of you know that I put a lot of…

Date Night at Hungarian Village

Annette Rochelle Aben's avatarAnnette Rochelle Aben

In response to the Carrot Ranch, 99 word Flash Fiction Challenge this week, I wrote about one of the most memorable places I have ever had the pleasure of finding. It was like pulling up a chair in the kitchen of the older couple down the street and eating whatever the woman of the house cooked that day.

FOLLOW  Charli Mills  and participate in the fun of her weekly challenges!

We loved the non-descript store front, because the fewer people who knew about this place, the easier it was to get a seat. Authentic Hungarian food was all they served and when what had been cooked every morning was gone, they locked the doors.

On the patched vinyl cushioned chairs, we sat patiently at a faded, red Formica table. Soon, a woman, whose age could be determined by counting the wrinkles on her face, delivered our plates. She wiped…

Belize: Sunset Lounge

Laci's avatarMcGee Travel Tales

One of the little things that I wanted to do while on our adventure was to see the sunset. The sun rises early in Belize and it also gets dark fairly early. The resort told us to check out the Sunset Lounge on the roof of a building near El Fogon. The view was a winner. Three stories isn’t very high but the building near it were only one story and we had a wonderful view.

We had fun taking pictures!

It was a bit late and a bit cloudy by the time we got there but the colors were still wonderful. Lots of blues with bits of pink and yellow.

Sorry for the photo quality – I had to snag this from Snapchat

The actual bar and most of the seating is covered but there are no walls and the view can be seen all around. We tried the…

How to Develop Your Brand as a Book Author

From a literary point of view, we live in blessed times! Thanks to the development of modern communication devices and platforms, almost anyone can put their thoughts on paper (or the word editor of their choice) and release them to the world.

We now have access to printed books, e-books, audiobooks, and more. This allows the information to flow unhindered and creates a wonderful environment for those who love to read and learn.

But this level of progress has also led to a change in your role as the author. Back in the day, your job would’ve been over once you applied the last of the…

Cricket Bites

rachelmankowitz's avatarrachelmankowitz

Cricket is a biter. She has been a biter since she was a puppy, and now that she’s 12 years old, I don’t see it changing. We were warned that Cockapoos could bite – though the warning came after Cricket came home from the breeder, and from an unreliable source, so, not especially helpful.

Cricket bites when she’s scared, angry, overexcited, etc. She resents any attempt to brush, comb, or clean her hair (though groomers have been able to do it, when she’s medicated). For her first two years, I worked hard at trying to condition Cricket to grooming at home. It was a long ritual, with lots of chicken treats and very gradual steps, and it was never, ever successful.
