Huntingdon & Mac’s

The times I’ve passed by Huntingdon on the A14 on my way to Stanstead Airport and said to myself I must stop off and visit this place. Well yesterday along with my PhotoBuddies we did. A couple of weeks back we dropped off one of the PhotoBuddies old Apple Mac’s at a repair specialist just the other side of Cambridge (it’s great to have a car again) We collected the newly refurbished Mac and stopped off at Huntingdon on the way home. I took a film camera with me and my digital Sigma DP1, these are some quick snaps from the Sigma.

SDIM1272-EditIt was the sight of this lovely medieval bridge that made me want to visit Huntingdon. The old bridge was built in the 1330’s and was the main crossing point of the Roman Ermine Street. Huntingdon was also the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell.

Underrated Summertime Supper

Gail's avatarsnapshotsincursive

What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? Fab Foodstuff: Underrated Summertime Supper! Does anyone have a Himalayan Salt Block besides me? Well, one of the things I like about it is, it can take the guesswork out of adding seasoning to food. It’s a block of pink salt, after all. When serving cold foods like salads, fruits, and cheeses, refrigerate the salt block overnight before using. This helps to keep foods chilled for hours when you need it. Simply arrange the ingredients directly on the block, drizzle on the dressing, and you’re good-to-go. Clean up is easy. Never use soap; salt is naturally antibacterial. Remove food residue with a damp cloth or sponge. Rinse it with a clean swipe, then dab dry. Allow the salt block to air-dry before next use. You’re done.

Day 26 – Natural Wonders #WorldWatercolorMonth

Mel's avatarMelanie Franz

So July ended and I am 5 drawings short for #WorldWatercolorMonth.

My excuse is that we had a long weekend coming up here in Iceland and I went on a road trip around the East Fjords of Iceland. It was marvellous but I am also glad to be back home and not to sleep in a tent any more in 10 degrees Celsius.

Prompt for day 26 – Natural Wonders. For a long time I wanted to draw these two Instagram models that I took a photo of at the Grand Cenote near Tulum, Mexico last year. They spend about an hour taking selfies without ever looking at any of the natural wonders around them.  Then they left, with their makeup and hair still perfectly intact. They were quite a source of amusement for the people that were actually having fun swimming in the cold clear waters.

The Cancer Question and Being Wary of Hope

Christina Chase's avatarChristina Chase

August 9th is nearing.  And that’s when I’m supposed to find out whether or not I have cancer.

flowers, forests, rotting log, rhododendron Decay and Flowers, Such Is Life

Statistically, I probably don’t, since the kind of cancer that we’re talking about is rare.  Of women that have uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) only about 1 in 1000 become cancerous (lieomyosarcoma).  Even so, I am rather a rare individual, already living with a debilitating motor neuron disease that only affects about 1 in 6000.  That and ultrasound imaging that shows rapid growth of the outer fibroids but not the inner one leave me with no feeling of assurance.

On my optimistic days (which far outnumber the pessimistic ones) I have confidence in the mercy of God and the reality of miracles.  Whether it started as cancer or not, I believe that God can cure it.  On those days when I feel like I probably do have cancer…

Joy of Heaven

Christina Chase's avatarChristina Chase

When I was going through my cancer scare, a friend of mine asked me to pray for her friend who had just been told that his leukemia was terminal.  And I didn’t know what to pray.  The thought of my own dying was, I think, still to close to the matter.  If I were, indeed, terminal, I thought, for what would I pray?  For what would I want others to pray?

After heading out of church one Sunday with a sudden, bright knowledge that I was healed, I began to understand what was important about last rites and what was needed in all of our prayers for the dying.  It isn’t enough to tidy things up before one dies and then leave everything to God’s mercy.  The part about leaving everything in God’s merciful hands is certainly sufficient, but the beautiful healing in that is not only the rightness…

Whirling in the wind

Brave and heroic ready to defend

Who wouldn’t want this courageous soldier

In your corner, fighting the battle

Putting the enemy into an orbit

By its whirling energy and dexterity
