There aren’t enough spaces where violence against lesbians can be openly discussed. But FiLiA – Britain’s biggest feminist conference – is one of them. TheĀ Violence Against Lesbians panelĀ took place in the Bradford Hotel on Saturday 19th October. Over a hundred women attended the session. Consuelo Rivera-Fuentes, Susan Hawthorne, Hilary McCollum, and Angela Wild made up the panel, chaired ably by Sally Jackson.

The purpose of FiLiA, as Sally opens by reminding us, is to amplify women’s voices. In particular, to amplify the voices of women who are seldom heard and often silenced. Lesbians’ voices aren’t always listened to – in mainstream society, feminist spaces, or even the LGBT community. And so, if the numbers are anything to go by, a lot of women feel a sense of relief that lesbians are a priority at FiLiA.

3 Words: Getting Older (Jernee)

Jernee Girl, sitting pretty as always.

Overactive bladder

nightmares

Jernee is eleven years old now, almost twelve. Her bladder, as expected, does not hold liquids as long as it used to. Thus, I make trips home during my lunch break, wake up in the middle of the night to take her out, and have resorted to putting ā€œpuppy padsā€ down once again to help my baby girl if I know I am going to be away from home much longer than expected. This is what aging is all about, eh?

Day 11. Mondello, Sicily

Little Miss Traveller's avatarLove Travelling Blog

A lazy start to our Sunday morning with a relaxing breakfast out on our terrace. Feeling ready to set off, we wandered through Palermo’s historic quarter, passing the vast Teatro Massimo and continuing along to the newer part of town with its designer shops. Soon, we arrived at the Teatro Politeama in the Piazza Ruggero Settimo. This theatre is the second most important in the city and is home to the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra.

Untitled Teatro Massimo, Palermo

Located just around the corner from this theatre is the bus stop to take passengers to the beach resort of Mondello. Buses leave at 20 minute intervals with AMAT services 806 and 833 (the latter being summer only). When catching buses in Italy please ensure that you are already in possession of a ticket, which is available from tobacconists (€1.40 adult single to anywhere within the city boundaries). The ticket needs to be…

My Halloween Conversation with Colleen

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Hello, Everyone! Happy Halloween!

The last few years I’ve reserved my Halloween interview spot for C. S. Boyack, one of my favorite speculative fiction authors. Craig has written several books that fit into the Halloween genre. One of my all-time favorite books he’s written is called Panama. Just, don’t read this one alone in the dark!

I usually ask authors to pick three or four questions from my huge listĀ HERE. However, because it’s Halloween, I let Craig pick his own questions. The best way to learn how to write captivating books is to learn from other successful authors.

Please meet my guest author, C. S. Boyack. Read the rest of of the interview here.

While in the Anglo-Saxon world, halloween is celebrated and the pumpkins appear everywhere in the Latin Catholic world, this custom is imitated wearing costumes. I am a little over 30 years old and I remember that in Italy people began to celebrate this event at the beginning of the 2000s, when TV – with American films and cartoons – brought the trick or treat event to people’s homes. Cartoons have been the main influence.

Cartoons (like the simpson) were the main factors that influenced the Catholic world. It is no coincidence that three episodes dedicated to the Simpsons were broadcast on the mediaset ITALIA1 channel.

Today, however, there are many who contest the Anglo-Saxon custom by calling it opposite to the Christian-Catholic culture as well as opposed to the national tradition. However, I believe that with the passing of the years the aversion towards…
