Rain Can’t Stop Colorful Celebration of Holi In Queens

IMG_2892 Happy Holi

An overcast day threatened to make the 31st Holi Festival Parade in Richmond Hills, Queens a soggy event. Luckily the heavy rains held off and it was an occasional light shower that sprayed the revelers lined up on Liberty Ave. with a hint of Spring. The Holi festival is one of the oldest festivals still celebrated in India and passed on to the generations of the Hindu-Caribbean community. Richmond Hills is home to the largest concentration of Guyanese and Hindu Trinidadian population in the city. Pre-parade festivities began just before noon at a small stage set up where a dance was performed and a plaque was dedicated to a police detective from the local precinct that made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Title: Calcutta Under Fire- the Second World War Years
Author: David Lockwood
Publisher: Rupa Publications
Pages: 304
ISBN: 978-9353333287
Source: Publisher

cufCalcutta Under Fire presents an account of what all underwent in India during the second Word War. It records the reactions of various stakeholders- mainly the colonial power of British and the Indian National Congress. Bombing of Calcutta and the possibility of a Japanese Invasion serves as the axis around which the whole book revolves.

The book opens with how the bombing took everyone off the guard and the ensuing chaos and the general atmosphere of uncertainty that engulfed the common people. Before focusing on the responses and strategies of the British, Indian and Japanese, the author establishes a background setting.

David Lockwood employs Antonio Gramsci’s concept of Hegemony and Counter-hegemony to elucidate the equation of the British with the Indian National Congress (INC). I enjoyed reading this section…

Review: Mooncallers: Shadows Burn (Mooncallers #2) by Leda C. Muir

Ezzydesu's avatarServillas Speaks

“We are given two choices in life, never more than that. Each achievement, each failure, each gain, and each loss will present a new perception. It is up to us to either accept it as a lesson or a wound. That being said, choosing the wound does not mean you are weak. To hurt is to discover. “

★★★★✩

There is something about Amniven that once again made me super enthousiastic. When Leda announced Mooncallers book 2 would be released late December, I couldn’t be happier! I started reading it shortly after it arrived and I had so much to feel.

For everyone who has no clue about the author and the series, here is a brief introduction.
Leda C. Muir is a 24 year old internet personality, mostly known from Youtube over the years. I started following her youtube videos in either 2012 or 2013 and she has been…

Review: Fleet of Knives (Embers of War #1) by Gareth L. Powell

Ezzydesu's avatarServillas Speaks

“Courage is making the choice to forgive even if when when every nerve in your body cries out for vengeance.”

★★★★★

I have received this book for free from Titan Books in exchange of an honest review.

Fleet of Knives is everything Embers of War is and more. As Titan Books send me both book one and two, I was able to read these back to back. That felt so good. I was submerged in this whole futuristic world for about a week and being able to start the sequel right away contributed to my reading experience in a very positive way.

While book one was all about the discovery of the Marble Armada, or the Fleet of Knives as some called it, book two was about exploring how they would fit into the world (and how these million ancient ships obviously don’t). About six months passed since the events…

Thursday photo prompt: Bright #writephoto – Light

It was at the exact moment when the sun hit the ground that life was able to surge.

It became contagious, as it moved across the forest floor and the life within the ground strung into action.

The light was food, a substance that helped those wanting to germinate, for those wishing to sprout, for those wanting a little warmth; it was there to satisfy their every need.

Above the ground the creatures opened their arms and took in the light, it not only warmed their hearts but also gave them hope.

As long as the sun shed its light their way, they continued to shine in its glow.

The two-legged forest inhabitants had long marvelled at the power the light generated.

They watched the sun flowers turn their colourful heads towards it and soak up all that was life-giving.

The forest inhabitants took nothing for granted, knowing the light…

The Great Mandate

antoniazen's avatarAntonia Sara Zenkevitch

They call this the greatest mandate ever;
even though the results split the UK
in half, more than one union near severed -
they call this the greatest mandate ever
when half the voters go unheard – inferred
consent through barefaced lies, flagrantly
they call this the greatest mandate ever
even though the results split the UK

they call this the great mandate. “How?” I ask,
when it was founded on fears and deceits,
raising profiles of hate, giving them masks;
they call this the great mandate. How, I ask,
do they ignore the UK’s biggest march
by citing only half a crooked plebiscite* -
they call this the great mandate; “how”, I ask,
when this was founded on fears and deceits.
