I’ve read a few short story collections by Patsy Collins that I enjoyed. At the end of one was an extract for this book which hooked my attention. I finally got around to reading it, I managed to get a copy from my local library. But you can buy it on Amazon in ebook or physical book format.

Synopsis from GoodReads

“Mavis Forthright carefully planned her jump from Portsmouth’s Round Tower. She’s existed for over five decades. Lived hardly at all. Will end her misery with a few second’s fall into the cold sea. Except she’s not quite ready to die. A half day’s delay to try a bacon sandwich from the cafe won’t matter. Mother’s no longer there to disapprove.

She delays another day to lend Janice a book. Then a week to use her new paints. A month. Until the end of term. Mavis makes new plans; to…

Thursday photo prompt: Rift #writephoto – Dragon’s Head.

cracked

The earth had rumbled for several days, which wasn’t unusual in those days.

When everything settled down, and we had the chance to get out and survey the damage it was then the dragon was discovered.

There had been a rift in the rock formations on what was known as Dragon Mountain, and to our surprise, there was the fossilised head of the dragon revealed for the first time.

It had been legend that the mountain had contained dragons in past years, but we all thought it nothing more than a myth serving our local tourist industry.

But now the head was there, in plain sight and we began to reassess our history.

Immediately moves were made to preserve the area, and the tourist operators sought ways to profit from the revelation.

It was interesting though as time went by to note that if you stepped too close to the…

Book Review: This Will Only Hurt A Little

Image result for this will only hurt a little

Busy Philipps is an actress that is probably known more for other things than her acting roles. In recent years, she has become more popular from her Instagram stories and being so open about her life. I wasn’t privy to this knowledge and was surprised when she got a book deal. I was like who wants to hear about her life? The book was everywhere so I decided to get in on the action.

Busy obeyed the golden rule of memoirs and was very open. Like super, duper open. We get a detailed account of her life starting from her childhood, which unfortunately is always my least favorite part of celeb memoirs, I just can’t find myself wanting to care about it and would rather get to the juicy stuff. Busy shares her family dynamic and how her sister was so mean to her. She gets into the dirty when…

My International Women’s Day

Sheila Morris's avatarI'll Call It Like I See It

I wrote this piece on March 08, 2017 and feel it’s worthy of inclusion in my Women’s History Month this year. I hope you agree.

Spring, 2017 will be the year I move on to my 71st birthday. I know, I know…unbelievable…and apparently my Mouth Almighty, Tongue Everlasting in my seventies shows no sign of a slowdown – if anything I seem to have gained speed with my posts following the not-too-distant sixties.

As I looked over the more than 80 posts I’ve made since April, 2016 when I began this year by talking about the need for a personal tune-up, I am amazed at how many opinions I’ve had on such a wide variety of topics. Geez Louise. Somebody stop me. I can’t shut up. Case in point, read on.

Change is in the air at Casa de Canterbury this spring, and Pretty and I are excited about our…

Here are some spiky squares I took the other day while on a walk around Orillia feeling like a tourist.

This one is of the Orillia Opera House. If you’re a Gordon Lightfoot fan you can see him perform here several times a year.

This is Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Churchin Orillia which is very close to where I live. All the brickwork is in limestone.

Photo Challenge #256 – When the Words Dry Up

What to do when the words dry up

When the stories become fewer and fewer.

Shall I retire to my self-made tower of illusion

Where reality twists and turns

Around invisible barriers and into multiple shades.

It’s a place where I feel safe

Away from everything threatening

Where time could, maybe, even speculate

A beginning with no ending or an ending with no beginning.

I’ll perch here a while and see if anyone notices.

5***** Review of Devil in the Wind by Frank Prem, poetry blurb: Devil In The Wind is an account of catastrophic fire and its immediate aftermath.
