Tuesday Photo Challenge – Years

jansenphoto's avatarDutch goes the Photo!

Welcome to week 153 of the Tuesday Photo Challenge.

In case you wondered, last week’s contributions were absolutely wonderful! To put it simply: all of you Rock!! Which leads me to this week’s theme: Rock… Looking through photos for inspiration, it struck me that this theme would allow for all of your creativity to be used. Whether you feel like rocking the cradle or the boat, or be as steady as the Rock of Gibraltar, go for hard rock or soft rock, there might be something in this theme just for you!

I’m looking forward to find out what kind of fun you can dream up for this week! Have fun with it!

Sometimes, the rock gets ground down into something small and smooth…

Pebbles!

When I encountered these pebbles on the beach, I knew there would be something here to capture… It’s almost like a pattern was laid…

Impervious

Sarah W's avatarBy Sarah

This life is such a mix.

One moment we’re wont to sing,

And in the next, we recoil –

feeling the sting.

Our spirits push and pull

Clouds over the moon.

Leaving us to bask in the chill.

None of us, are impervious

To this alchemy.

Add a pinch of salt

And a dash of pepper.

The final brew is unknown.

Thinking we must swallow it alone,

Is a tipping point of despair.

Until I feel another’s hand

reach out and hold me in the balance.

My heart did swell, when

Thick in the quagmire,

I found you.

Always you.

A palace fit for an English Queen

BeckyB of Winchester's avatarBecky in Portugal

At the start of our walk I had no idea we would be discovering the home of an English Queen, I was too distracted by the Portuguese man of inexhaustible activity and what seemed at the time an almost impossible goal of completing the walk. StatueA horrid cold which had been slowing me down for a few days had finally taken hold. It was an effort to even get dressed, however I was determined we should do something as it was quite gorgeous out and this would be our last full day in Lisbon for a year. I managed to convince MrB I was up for a short stroll to one of Lisboa’s fabulous view points. Unfortunately I hadn’t quite taken into account the viewpoint I had set my heart on was located on one of the highest hills! Fortunately though there were numerous recovery points where we could stop…

Festa Grande da Mãe Soberana

BeckyB of Winchester's avatarBecky in Portugal

After last year’s c’est la vie we finally made it. DSCN8964Arrived too late to collect a scarf but probably a little bit too early for the procession, still we got a parking space. We were not too sure what to expect but after the beautiful parade at São Brás we were hopeful, after all the ‘Feast of the Sovereign Mother’ is the one everyone seems to talk about.

Viva a Mãe Soberana!
Viva a Senhora da Piedade!
Viva os Homens do Andor!
Viva os Homens da Banda!

DSCN8965The ‘Feste Grande’ is when the farewell is made, and the Sovereign Mother is carried back to her sanctuary. The sculpture dates back to the late 16th/early 17th century and her sanctuary from 1533. There is now a new church beside the old chapel, and both are worth a visit if you are in the vicinity. Here’s my post from a previous visit.

Blessing of the Sea

BeckyB of Winchester's avatarBecky in Portugal

Think I’ll let the photographs speak for themselves. They are all from today’s tradicional Procissão do Senhor dos Passos in Olhao (Procession of the Lord of the Steps).

The procession began after Mass in Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário. From Restoration Square it weaved its way to the sea front. There were a few stops on the way including a short ceremony at an ‘altar’ close to the markets. One of the most important stops was the Blessing of the Sea. The procession then returned to Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário via a different route and apparently included another ceremony on the Avenue of the Republic.

Following in the footsteps of the Crusaders

BeckyB of Winchester's avatarBecky in Portugal

If you have been following me a while on this blog then you may recall three years ago we were lucky enough to be in Olhão da Restauração for the blessing of the sea. It was a rather joyous occasion, proceeded by the more sombre but equally fascinating Procissão do Senhor dos Passos. We then managed to miss it for the next two years, and so this year we were determined not to miss out again.

Identifying Colors: Real World vs. Electronics

Ginny Cruz's avatarGinny Cruz

How many shades of green has God created? How about blue? When I was a child, we loved to color and took our time selecting the correct shade. Did we want yellow green or granny smith apple green? Would cornflower blue be the color or maybe we’d choose periwinkle?

Funny thing is, I can still smell those crayons. My mind still feels the coolness of the wax and recalls how difficult it was to peel back the paper without tearing it all the way off. We had to leave the paper on to remember the color, ’cause we had one of those big boxes of 64.

I evaluate a lot of young children and if they’re 2ish or 3ish, we identify basic colors. Here’s what often happens:

Mom will report, “She knows her colors because she plays those games on the iPad.” Then the evaluator will place four small squares…

Canada Goose

Canada Goose

I saw This Canada goose one day while I was at a hospital, and he was down below me outside, in a mechanical area, quite a fair distance away.  I stood watching him wondering why he was there and all alone. He would fly from one thing to another but appeared to be having problems getting into flight. He kept trying to fly but could only get so high and then he’d land.  A few geese from his flock (so I thought) showed up and  after a few more attempts he gained air and flew away,
