Rural Homelessness

It said the number of people sleeping rough in barns, outhouses and parked cars in rural areas had risen by up to 32% between 2010 and 2016. It is a problem but it’s a relatively well hidden problem.

To a certain extent there has always been an issue. I have family and friends of my own age who started their married lives in a caravan tucked round the back of the family farm. The newlyweds had a bedroom and kitchen of their own and if they wanted to do anything so exotic as to wash or go to the toilet, then they’d have to go into the house.

It was just one of those things. Working in agriculture you were stuck in a low wage economy and because your home and workplace was in the countryside, you were stuck in a high house-price area. Eventually if the family owned the…

Lisa Burton

Don’t touch that dial! You’ve landed on Lisa Burton Radio. The only show that brings you interviews with the characters from the books you love.

I’m your host Lisa the robot girl, and my special guest today is a cat. A very special cat named Marmaduke. “What brings you to the show today, Marmaduke?”

“Diana, my human, has been acting strangely. We’ve rubbed along fine for years, just the two of us, she does her thing, I do mine. Different hours, different lifestyles, but checking in over a saucer of milk or coffee a couple of times a day. A pair of bachelorettes …”

“Oh! So you’re a girl cat.”

“I certainly was last time I looked. Is that relevant, do you suppose?”

“I just thought. You know, Marmaduke is typ—. Why would you be concerned about Diana?”

“I knew something was up when she went on a cleaning blitz…

Just a nice cup of coffee and a piece of cake!

Just a nice cup of coffee and a piece of cake

Let us be honest here. I am a man of simple tastes who doesn’t ask for a lot out of life. The occasional glass of a nice wine, the muted applause of my peers recognising the unsurpassed excellence of my work. Then from time to time it is nice to enjoy some of the simpler creature comforts, to be warm and comfortable. Surely these aren’t much for a chap to ask for?

Shena and I had been to the funeral of an old family friend. They had lived and died in a hamlet south of Port Naain and we had crossed the river and walked south the day before. We’d stayed overnight to share the family meal and the sharing of memories, then we’d been up early. I to help dig a grave in the frozen earth, Shena to help prepare breakfast for those who came to partake in the…

Thursday photo prompt: Destination #writephoto

For visually challenged writers, theimage shows a path between an avenue of trees. Shadows from hidden sunlight fall across the path, but mist obscures the way forward…

Destination.

When morning took hold it was bright but very misty. Calador shivered as he watched the mist roll up to the ramparts obscuring the road ahead. Though there was sunlight is was pale and held no warmth. The trees that lined the road cast shadows across the short distance he could see.

Wrapping his cloak around him Calador felt the damp but above that he felt a dark menace that he could neither see nor pinpoint. The mist enveloped him, in it he heard the voices of thousands of Vampires, evil beyond his darkest dreams, and humans and animals screaming.

Just as this grew unbearable something touched him on the shoulder, he jumped. Swinging round dagger drawn and ready to defend…

August Aliveness – It’s time to Shine

Miriam's avatarOut an' About

You are the creator of your own life and this is a great work of art. It’s time to write a new chapter”.

So says the quote on today’s page of my Gratitude Journal. Can you resonate?

Has anyone else felt a bit of a shift? Perhaps the stars and planets are aligned. As I write this, here in Melbourne, it’s Thursday the first day of August and it’s a new moon which equates to new beginnings.

I feel it in the air. I’ve felt the excitement building all month.

A week ago I saw this hot air balloon flying over my home

Looking back at how July began, I’m so grateful I made the decision to begin a six month personal development course. It was a big leap of faith and I’ll admit I was scared shitless, jumping into the unknown. But it’s felt like a springboard, diving…

American Pavilion – Epcot

koolaidmoms's avatarEarning My Disney PhD

As we were walking out of Italy after exploring a bit we headed towards the American Pavilion. One of my favorite shows is “The American Adventure.” As we were walking over we saw the above sign and noticed the show was starting in 10 minutes. The theater was only about a quarter full. I have a confession. I have NEVER seen Guardians of the Galaxy but my wife and son have and I knew they loved it. So, we decided to stop and see what it was about.

I have to tell you shortly after the show started I was about 30 seconds from walking out. The music was screechy and bad heavy metal sounding. I looked around and no one was moving. I had decided that if this continued we were out of there. Thankfully, I stayed and the show was very cute. I loved the music and it…
