December Reflections 22: solstice light

I love what the light does in this church. Often – and I can be anywhere in the church, and it can be any time of the day – I am surprised by some new lovely way that it falls. At Evensong on Easter day I am up in the stalls, and the evening light streams richly through the rich colours of the windows at the west end. On a Sunday morning I am usually in the south aisle, and and the light is clear and bright and it makes the pillars look like a watercolour painting. Sometimes a butterfly wakes and flutters around. There’s the warm orange through the chancel windows, and the high summer light filtered through pale green and pink glass in the clerestory. There’s the darkness, too: a stormy Ash Wednesday evening with the windows dark and opaque.

This morning was grey, and I left the…

In a Vase on Monday: the Ink is Black, the Page is White

Cathy's avatarRambling in the Garden

The ink is black
The page is white
Together we learn to read and write
A child is black
A child is white
A whole world looks upon the sight
A beautiful sight

I unexpectedly noticed the delicious looking berries of  Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ last week and immediately visualised them in a vase with the contrasting white berries of the ‘devil’s plant’ Symphoricarpos albus. Once picked, I couldn’t keep the lyrics of  ‘The ink is black‘ from going round and round in my head,  hence the title; after choosing the background colour, however, these thoughts were replaced by the joke ‘What’s black and white and red all over?’ (a book/newspaper), but that potential title will have to wait for another vase.

The reference to writing made the choice of vase and prop easy – a little glass inkwell and vintage fountain pen. I am sure the pen…

🎵 COLDPLAY – Champion of the world

gabrieleromano's avatarGabriele Romano

After listening to the whole album on spotify I can say that this is the best song on the album. The style of the various songs differs greatly from that of the previous albums. Some may be disappointed by the more classic and less rock style.

In fact I like this album less, where the voices and the choirs take over the music and the voice of Chris Martin. Probably the band had the need to break a bit with the classic pop-rock that made all the songs of real hits.

The first part of the text is in Igbo language, a language of an African ethnic group that lives in Nigeria and the translation is:

What are you talking about, dear God?
For everything
God made it

LYRICS
Gi nwa nke chukwu, gini ka ina ekwu
N’ihi ihe nile
Nke chukwu mere

I tried my best to be just like
The other…

A Delicious Trip to Louisville, Kentucky

koolaidmoms's avatarWhat's for Dinner Moms?

I fully intended to post this yesterday but I was so tired after the weekend. I couldn’t even get it done.

The Mid_America Oireachtas was this past weekend. We left on Thanksgiving morning to travel to Louisville, Kentucky. The Irish Dance Regionals are held each year over the weekend immediately following Thanksgiving. Imagine thousands of Irish dancers and their families meeting for one weekend. It is fun and super tiring!

My daughter danced on a celli team and did a traditional set (all the dance steps for the traditional dances are 95% the same all over the world). Her celli team finished 5th and they were super happy to recall.  There were only 5 teams but they felt good about what they did and it was the first time their team recalled.

Her traditional set was good too. When she finished dancing she came off stage and said, “That felt…

Day 1. A short break in Istanbul, Turkey

Little Miss Traveller's avatarLove Travelling Blog

In readiness for our morning flight from London Gatwick Airport we had stayed overnight at a Travelodge in Crawley. This proved convenient as buses depart from near the hotel (Bus 10) to the south terminal taking only 20 minutes with tickets from the driver costing just £2.50.

Untitled No queues at the Turkish Airlines check-in desks

We arrived at the airport at 7.25 a.m. and were pleasantly surprised to find no queues whatsoever at the Turkish Airlines check-in desk. As our flight wasn’t scheduled to depart for a further three hours we were able to make use of our ‘My Gatwick‘ membership and popped into the Regus Express Business Lounge for a complimentary cup of coffee. If you plan to call in there, just download a voucher in advance and include your flight details. Complimentary access is available for up to one hour but as the lounge is before…
