Climate change is humanity’s biggest own goal ever

Matthew Wright's avatarMatthew Wright

It started raining so hard the other week that animals began lining up two-by-two to board a boat owned by my neighbours.

I am only being slightly hyperbolic with that statement. Topsy-turvy weather seems to be the name of the game at the moment, not just in my neighbourhood but right around the world as far as I can tell.

It’s a direct outcome of the obvious issue – climate change, in which humanity’s own industrial wastes – notably carbon dioxide build-up over the past 250-odd years, particularly – have been the triggering factor. It’s an own goal of the largest dimension, and the immediate outcome is chaotic weather patterns in which the weather systems are, literally, being pushed out of place. Later on that will be joined by rising sea levels, along with more chaotic weather…

Humanity’s biggest own goals

Matthew Wright's avatarMatthew Wright

There’s no question in my mind that human-driven climate
change has to be one of the biggest own-goals humanity has ever struck on
itself. And we should have seen it coming. I mean, we’ve been pushing
combustion products into the atmosphere in ever-larger quantities since the
advent of industrialisation, over 200 years ago. We’ve been burning up fossil
fuels, polluting the environment, hacking down forests and generally creating
ecological mayhem at ever-increasing scale and speed. What did we think would
happen?

When I say ‘one of’ the biggest own goals, to my thinking there’s only one other totally massive own-goal in the same league; the invention of nuclear weapons. And it’s a bigger one. The thing about human-driven climate change is that ultimately it’s not risking end-game. It’ll likely reduce what we call our civilisation. It’ll change…

Why did I buy a 1984 Camper Van?

Docmong's avatarHideous

You know that old saying “this mistake had to be made.” Well I will be perfectly honest, my friends and I could have went on without buying this camper van.

What you are about to read, is the reason my friends second guess my brilliant eureka ideas.  I want to clarify, we were young, ambitious and could not bother analyzing any decisions before they were made.  What an amazing time in our youth.  This is the story of our failed road trip to the east coast, and the purchase of a 1984, potentially stolen, rancid, nonfunctional Dodge Ram van off Kijiji.  This is my attempt to do this story justice.

The year is 2016, my friends and I are in our first year of University and we were clearly in need of a new adventure.  I had been casually scouting the Kijiji car pages for quite some time, and finally…

If you have never fail, you have never try something new.

Divine's avatarBeing Yourself

Failure is a part of our everyday life. I have once read , “If you have never fail, you have never try something new.” Failing to do something or accomplish that project, is a sign that you are trying and that way of doing it is not working.  Many give up when they have failed once or twice because sometimes it is  hard to learn from failures and adjust. At the end of the article, I will try to give you some tips to accept and overcome failures.IMG_20171116_201925_082

A few months ago I heard about MCshop and its young founders Mike and Christian. The online platform was created because of the increased demand of their Congolese friends for  high quality products coming from aboard, especially from South Africa. With no experiences nor funds, the two friends saw an opportunity to fill the gap in online shopping arena in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
