Blown Away

Let not Magadi road lie to you that traffic on weekends is fast. And no amount of waking up early could
save your ass for Anslem Kitengela.

The journey has begun. That of cheap places to explore in Nairobi and its environs. The one that will leave you cursing some tour companies for overcharging your pockets. Yes am here to snitch! I don’t fathom how on earth you would pay Ksh 2,500 and above for a place you can comfortably access with the help of Google and its Maps. Places that you only need Ksh 1,000 plus keep change. You will thank
me later but any who it is not my money.

Directions
Since am in the KBF (Kaguru by Foot-don’t drive since I don’t own a car) department, I boarded number
125 bus at Railways that head to Ongata Rongai. These will charge you Ksh 50 on the higher…

U.S: Catholic diocese denies lesbian judge communion

judge

A church in Michigan denied Holy Communion to a state district court judge because she is married to a woman.

Judge Sara Smolenski, the chief judge of Michigan’s 63rd District Court, received a call from the priest at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, requesting she not attend communion.

Judge Sara Smolenski was told she could no longer receive communion at her Catholic Church because she is married to a woman.

“This is not about me against the priest, and it’s not really me against the church,” Smolenski told CNN. “This feels like selective discrimination. Why choose gay people, and why now?”

Smolenski, 62, said that the Rev. Scott Nolan, the priest at St. Stephen for approximately three years, called her on November 23 and told her, “‘It was good to see you in church on Sunday. Because you and Linda are married in the state of Michigan…

Ina Vase on Monday: More Teeny Tiny

Cathy's avatarRambling in the Garden

Another teeny tiny vase on Monday for me, and despite trying several alternatives I am still using the little Bretby Pottery jug I used in the anniversary post, giving an arrangement a mere 10cm (4″) tall.

The jug is filled mostly with Bellis perennis which, unlike later in the season, necessitated a teeny vase due to the length of the stems – later on, a small rather than teeny vase would suffice! Joining the bellis is variably coloured foliage of dwarf Pieris japonica ‘Little Heath’ and some berried stems of what I nicknamed ‘the Devil’s plant’** after spending hours digging out roots which were invading us from our neighbour’s garden. Sadly, the invasion began again almost immediately…

Completing this first vase in December is a teeny teddy enjoying an equally teeny cup of tea, heralding leaner times in the garden until the early bulbs begin flowering – leaner times for…

Down the wormhole?

Sue Vincent's avatarSue Vincent's Daily Echo

I am waiting for a hospital appointment. I have now been waiting for nearly three weeks and have heard nothing. It is a good thing that I am not expecting them to find what they are looking for, or I might well be beyond help before they found it. In fact, the longer the waiting goes on, the more likely they are to say they couldn’t actually find a brain at all, just a quivering lump of jelly, flolloping around in an empty skull and looking for a way out.

Because I do not fancy the thought of an hour stuffed down a wormhole with a pneumatic drill.

A wormhole is, of necessity, just big enough for the worm, with no room for manoeuvre. That’s bad enough. Knowing you will be strapped down and immobilised before they shove you in the thing, making any attempt at a hurried escape utterly…

My Yesterday in Pictures Format

I’ve simply built my daily walking & painting up to the point where I need the time for these two vital parts of keeping me healthy and/or sane, lol!

Plus, instead of having to work images into the My Day Ahead series posts, this new series will enable me to keep those as pure text, and supplement with images from a variety of possibilities here. It’s an experiment of course, so we’ll see 😊

The Changing Seasons, November 2019

I think if I had to find one word to describe myself at the moment, it would be introspective. Exhausted worrying about a world I have little power to influence, I’ve withdrawn to the personal, domestic space where my thoughts and actions can make a difference.

I began the month in New Plymouth, visiting the gardens — both beautiful and functional — of the Taranaki Garden Festival and Sustainable Backyards Trail. I met people who grow their own food on tiny suburban plots, others who are creating off-grid lifestyles, and some of the professional gardeners whose job it is to care for the area’s stunning Regional Gardens — at Tupare, Pukeitiand Holland Gardens.

I came home energised, inspired and with my head as full of free-range, sustainably grown, nutrient-dense ideas as I’d hoped. The gardens…
