When you first look at a pelican, no matter how many you have seen, the first thing that you notice is their weird, uncanny beak. But equally impressive are their huge, powerful wings. (See the second photo above.)  An adult American White Pelican weighs 14 lbs, but has a wing span of 9 Feet. They are one of the largest North American birds.

Italy: Lesbian couple’s car vandalised at home

Liz's avatarListening to Lesbians

civitavecchia lesbophobia

Pantano area, Civitavecchia (in the province of Rome). When they woke, Monica and Romina discovered that their car had been vandalised in the night, with two homophobic phrases. Monica and Romina are a lesbian couple, who were born and raised in Civitavecchia, and it is in their city that they decided to live together. They have been in a relationship for over 10 years, and together with their 3 children, they are a beautiful rainbow family. But tonight someone decided to have fun writing two highly offensive phrases about their car.

“Lecca vongole” [clam lickers] is clearly written. The second sentence is written in Romanian, reports Fabrizio Marrazzo, spokesman for the Gay Centre. These two slang terms are commonly used to refer [pejoratively] to lesbian women.

Cozy Cabins in Crested Butte, Colorado

pam@ichoosethis's avatar...i choose this...

We like to mix things up a bit when traveling and always try to find a unique place to stay outside of the standard hotel or a tent. Something like a cabin, a cool, cozy cabin, not the Ted Kaczynski creepy kind.

We actually found some great cabins in Crested Butte, Colorado. The hiking and mountain biking in this part of the state are some of the best, so a yearly visit is always on the agenda!! The cabins are called the Pioneer Guest Cabins. They are roughly 80 years old now and are about a 10 to 15 minute drive outside of downtown Crested Butte.

Cabin rentals can be tricky. You have to really study the property. We look for real flowers (not the plastic kind), clean premises (no trash blowing in the wind, trucks on cement blocks, or dirty diapers strewn about), and greater separation between structures to…

Rocky Mountain National Park on a Sunday Afternoon

pam@ichoosethis's avatar...i choose this...

So, I had a date with my camera today. We went to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado for an afternoon of hiking. I forgot the book with the trail descriptions so we had to wing it. I swear I’m losing my mind or getting lazy, or both.

Sean couldn’t come today. He had a work shift to learn some search and rescue techniques for his part time winter job. He had to wear an ugly sweater,,,,since we didn’t have one, I lent him my cats drinking wine/martinis flannel pajama top to wear. My one regret in life: I did not take a picture of him in the pajama top.

Not bringing the book ended up being a godsend…only because I stopped at the first trailhead parking lot I came across. There were plenty of parking spots available. Of course the parking lot was an ice-skating rink with a glassy…

Jo’s Monday walk : Sáo Brás de Alportel, then and now

restlessjo's avatarrestlessjo

One Monday morning, earlier this year, I was wandering in the sleepy back streets of Sáo Brás de Alportel.  In a ruin mostly used for car parking I stopped to examine the remnants of old photos pasted onto the walls.   This is a town rich in tradition, where paper flowers are liberally used to decorate the streets at Easter time.  The scenes feature a quiet nearby street, the bombeiros or fire brigade, a local dance, and a lorry load of cork.  A museum in the town is dedicated to the cork industry, and piles of cork can often be seen drying in the surrounding hills.  The use of Monochrome can make a scene look ancient, but in Sáo Brás the past never seems very far away.

Until the council decided a change of image was needed.  New fountains on slick marble squares, and metal animal sculptures now grace the centre…

Langkawi’s Lesser Known Beach – Pasir Tengkorak

Deepak Acharya's avatarBon Voyage

Who does not need sun, sand and water during vacation? Well, during a short trip to Langkawi, I was heavily recommended to visit Pasir Tengkorak Beach by cab drivers as well hostel staff. And I was glad that I listened to their advice.

When I reached the place, there were only three people on the beach. Just imagine. Crystal clear water and white sand beach welcomed me. I embraced the nature with a broad smile. It was pure and pristine.

Surrounded by a forested area, this beach is definitely suitable for swimming. To reach this place you have to use your own vehicle.

IMG_20191014_155757IMG_20191014_155909

I used Grab app (Quite popular in South-East Asia) to reach the place. While leaving the beach I faced much problem while booking a cab as this beach . However, after few minutes of struggle, one cab driver came to pick me up. Also, keep in mind…

Clara, Dorothy and Phyllis Come to Tea

Cathy's avatarRambling in the Garden

I am sure I have brought other lovelies to tea on a previous Monday morning, but today it is the turn of Dahlia ‘Dorothy Rose’, Chrysanthemum ‘Clara Curtis’ and Salvia ‘Phyllis Fancy’, nipped at their heels by Antirrhinum ‘Liberty Classic Rose Pink’.

I picked a sprig of Clara’s cousin, ‘Jessie Cooper’, to include in a posy for a friend last week and was surprised and delighted to find it had a fragrance when brought inside, a fragrance one could perhaps describe as ‘honey’, and Clara appears to have the same. Outside, this fragrance is undetectable, warmth presumably being the necessary trigger. Incidentally, the stems of Jessie Cooper included in the vase of zinnias a fortnight ago are still blooming and looking fresh – having only introduced them to the garden in the last couple of years, it is not surprising that my admiration for these hardy chrysanthemums is growing!

Today’s…
