Garrett’s Bones by K. D. Dowdall is a book that will satisfy readers from the young to the, may I say, more experienced and older. Dowdall combines suspense, intrigue, excellent character development, themes of the forest and spirits, along with a well-paced and well-developed plot into a book that resonates with power and beauty.

This novel is both a coming-of-age Bildungsroman and an exploration of themes of good against evil. The main characters, Garrett and Anna, are young and have a complex relationship throughout the book. It is one of the strengths of the novel that Dowdall creates multi-dimensional characters whose hopes and dreams, fears and anxieties, strengths and weaknesses permeate the tale.

Additionally, this book speaks of the supernatural as well as history, love as well as hatred, and life as well as death. I was moved when I read it, and I consider it to be an extraordinary…

Lullaby

kathleenjowitt's avatarKathleen Jowitt

My love, the moon is rising;
The sun sinks in the west:
Pull up the blanket of the stars
And rest.

My love, the moon is shining
A path across the deep:
Pull up the blanket of the stars
And sleep.

My love, the moon is showing
A beacon in its gleam:
Pull up the blanket of the stars
And dream.

My love, the moon is setting;
The day begins to break:
Fold up the blanket of the stars
And wake.

I Stand With New Zealand, and I Stand Against Bigotry Anywhere

Once again, the world witnesses the horror of an evil person committing mass murder, this time against innocent worshipers in a mosque in New Zealand. It is an unthinkable horror, with at least 49 dead and many more wounded.

The person who perpetrated this evil was a white supremacist who saw immigration as an evil that somehow threatened white people.

The true evil of hatred and bigotry is growing in our world. Unfortunately, the fascism that seemed to have been defeated in World War Two is active and, once again, emerging. It must be opposed by reasonable people everywhere.

Political figures who stoke the fires of bigotry for their own purposes must bear some of the responsibility for these terrible actions, but we, the people of the world, must stand up to right-wing extremism and bigotry always.

I grieve for the pain of the people who suffer from this…

A stroll in the Barrocal

BeckyB of Winchester's avatarBecky in Portugal

It has been a while since I took you to the barrocal, I think the last time was when I was struck down with orchidelirium! Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately) there was no risk of this the week before last as not only was it too early for orchids but we were meeting up with friends for lunch.

And it was not just a delicious lunch we enjoyed with them on their terrace, they also took us out for a rather splendid stroll in their wonderful valley in a part of the Algarve known as the barrocal.

Vivatera – Candace J. Thomas

How delightful. A mystery. That puts every possibility before you.

Summary
Naomi never knew her parents. She doesn’t know where her scar came from or why does she have dreams that sometimes come true. But one day she crosses paths with a stranger that seems to carry all of the answers. He’s just not willing to share them.

Writing
The writing style is very simple and easy to read, though during more action-packed scenes it gets a little chaotic. It sometimes can make a scene feel a bit jumbled, almost like there is a sentence or two missing here and there.

I really liked the way dream sequences were written. I am usually not a fan of them, because most of the books tend to portray dreams as comprehensive, almost movie-like moments. But in Vivatera the dream feels like an actual dream – a set of images, sounds and feelings…
