But home isn’t where you land; home is where you launch. You can’t pick your home any more than you can choose your family. In poker, you get five cards. Three of them you can swap out, but two are yours to keep: family and native land.”

Taynement: So what did you think?

Leggy: I thought it was okay.

Taynement: Wow. Just okay? I absolutely loved it

Leggy: I have to say. I really didn’t like the blurb the publishers wrote for this book. I hate that they told us exactly what was going to happen so I spent like the first 50 pages just waiting for the “event”. It made my reading experience seriously unbearable.
You know I had the hardcover so the blurb was literally there. I didn’t even go seeking any spoilers

Taynement: Oh per usual, I didn’t read one. Well I’ve always said…

Book Review: Vox by Christina Dalcher

Image result for vox book“Whose fault do you think it was?” he said. I stood in my kitchen, wanting to explain, careful not to, while he told me we’d marched one too many times, written one too many letters, screamed one too many words. “You women. You need to be taught a lesson.”

I don’t even remember how I stumbled on this book. I think it had a lot of buzz when it first came on the scene but people backed away from it because Christians did not like the way they were portrayed in the book. Anyway, I found the premise super interesting and decided to give it a shot.

This book is a dystopian novel set in an American society where women have been silenced. They are only allowed to be seen and not heard. They are assigned 140 words a day and that is all. They are not allowed passports, not…

I was so intrigued when the author contacted me and asked me to review this book for this blog tour. The cover intrigued me, (I know you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover). I actually read this book twice, I read the ARC ebook and I was just about to reread when this package came:

The yo-yo and the sweets tie into the story. This package made my day!

There’s something special about this series of books. It’s  going to be serialised, like Dickens used to do, releasing it in small bits at a time. A bit like watching an episode a week of your favourite tv show. It’s different and I like it. There’s more explanation at the beginning of the book.

So you’ve seen the cover, here’s a note from the author:

My thoughts

After reading the author’s introduction I was riveted. Straight away I knew this was…

Review: The Near Witch (The Near Witch #1) by V.E. Schwab

“Fear is a strange thing,” he used to say. “It has the power to make people close their eyes, turn away. Nothing good grows out of fear.”

★★★★✩

I have received this book for free from Titan Books in exchange of an honest review.

It has almost been a week since the official re-release of Victoria Schwab’s debut novel. It has been out of print for years, but 2019 is the year us fans can enjoy the book where it all began: The Near Witch! Complete with a beautiful new cover and a short story, this book is finally ready to venture into the world.
I was very lucky to receive an early finished copy and I finished this gem well before release. I planned to review it last week, but life happened and had to postpone it. But, better late than never, right?

The Near Witch is a…

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Wonder

jansenphoto's avatarDutch goes the Photo!

Welcome to week 152 of the Tuesday Photo Challenge.

After last week’s pleasant surprise that I hadn’t used Sunrise as a theme before, I really wondered… And, yes!! I have never used Wonder as a theme either! Whether you want to feature the Wonders of Nature, the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World or make us wonder what you may have photographed, there are plenty of directions for you to take this theme! And, of course, I expect all of your ideas to be wonderful!!

I think that there’s a lot of fun to be had with this week’s theme, so I look forward to see what you are going to create!

Here’s one of Nature’s wonders

Giant Swallowtail

This gorgeous Giant Swallowtail was sitting perfectly still, allowing me to get a nice sharp focus that highlights all the amazing details of this stunning creature. One of these…

Things That Surprised Me About The First Trimester

Steph's avatarPicking the Day

First Trimester 3

I know, I know, I said I wasn’t going to flood the place with baby talk, didn’t I?! But cut me some slack, it’s only just become public knowledge that I’m having my first baby, and to be frank, keeping this kind of major news a secret for such a long time has been all kinds of torturous for me! So I hope you can forgive me in needing to get some of these crazy thoughts that I’ve been keeping inside for the last three months off my chest! Starting with, of course, what an absolute mind bending confusion-fest those first few months can be! I should warn you it’s a long one, and it isn’t pretty, so buckle up…

I guess those of you who are already Mum’s probably know all this already, and I am sure are chuckling away into your tea at my silly naivety and wondering…
