Weekend Wanderings: Dvorak’s New World Symphony

Laci's avatarMcGee Travel Tales

Before Christmas Keltin and I went to see a performance by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra: John William’s Christmas. Having loved it so much we decided that we needed to go to some more shows at the Meyerson. The first of which was Dvorak’s New World Symphony. Of course the NewWorldSymphony is not the only thing preformed.

Before taking our seats in the performance hall there was a Performance Prelude in the main lobby. The short performance was by the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy Glee Club and they sang a cappella. And sounded quite wonderful.

The Dallas Symphony performed three pieces and I loved all of them. Each movement reminded me of different thing.

We had awesome seats.

The first piece performed was Orawa by Kilar and the whole piece was strings and performed beautify. It brought to mind horses running on a beach with manes and tails flowing…

TCHAIKOVSKY PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1: Dallas, TX

Laci's avatarMcGee Travel Tales

Keltin and I have had a busy week but we still found time to squeeze in a performance by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. We always love going because the music sweeps you away. Hearing it in person, feeling the vibrations in the air, the pounding of the drums reverberation in your own chest is magical.

The concert began with a short piece called Nocturne by Michael Ipplito. It made me think of a winter twilight turning to night, a midwinter festival with snow falling and a bonfire chasing away the dark of winter night.

Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto was in three movements. I could tell where the first one stopped and the next began but I wasn’t sure about where the third began. The whole piece made me think of soaring on the wind, sometimes wild and reckless and sometime as if on a gentle breeze. Towards the end of the…

U.K: Lesbian kicked unconscious in a spate of homophobic attacks in Birmingham

becky

A gay woman has told how she was kicked unconscious in Birmingham’s Gay Village after confronting a straight couple for ‘touching her inappropriately’.

Rebecca Tebbett was enjoying a night out in the city ‘safe space’ with her friends as she had done many times before when she says the pair approached her.

The 39-year-old lesbian claims the strangers began touching her inappropriately in a pub, but when she made it clear that she wasn’t interested the situation turned violent.

Rebecca said: “I was dancing with my friends, like I have done a million times before when I was approached by a straight couple.

“They started touching me inappropriately and making me feel very uncomfortable. But when I told them to stop, the woman threw her drink over me.

“I then threw the last of the drink I had over her but that was when the man pushed me to the…

Dornie and Eilean Donan

Eilean Donan Castle

In July, we spent a week in an apartment within walking distance of Eilean Donan, arguably the most romantic and most photographed of all Scotland’s castles. It’s a bit of a cheat though – originally established in 1230, it was destroyed during the Jacobite uprising in 1719 and what you see today was rebuilt between 1912 and 1932 by a British army officer, John MacRae-Gilstrap. The MacRae clan has ancestral links to the area and its war memorial is below the castle walls (see gallery below).

We took a stroll round the exterior after we arrived late on Saturday afternoon, and returned a few days later to look inside. No interior photography was allowed, but I think the exterior is the spectacular part anyway.

In the last picture above we are looking down from the castle onto the remains of a medieval tower (more or less obscured…

Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

indianeskitchen's avatarIn Dianes Kitchen

My mom made Pineapple Upside-Down Cake many times when I was growing up. It was always one of my favorites. I don’t know if it is because of the taste or the fascination of baking a cake upside down. My favorite part was always the cherries, and still is. If you want to make a dessert to impress your guests, this is the one. You can use a regular 9 x 13 pan, round pan or whatever pan you would like. This was my first time making it in a cast iron pan and I have no regrets! I found this recipe at http://www.bettycrocker.com.

French Apple Cake

French Apple Cake is a dessert with a custard, apple rich base and a cake like topping. Slices instead of chunks of sweet apple made this a little different than the traditional French Apple Cake. The recipe is from America’s Test Kitchen and I made this in a cooking class that I attended. This is not a real sweet dessert.

Ingredients

CA0B7BAB-1A6D-41C6-A4AD-60E356BBA1C1

Spray a 9″ springform pan with cooking oil.

(Due to making this in a cooking class I attended,

we had to use 2 aluminum pans because we split

the recipe with our partner)

Place the pan on a foil covered baking sheet.

Core and slice the peeled apples into 1/8″ pieces. Place

the slices onto a microwave safe plate and cover. Microwave

the apple slices on high until pliable but not completely soft,

about 3 minutes. When they are cooked properly,

you should be able to bend a slice…
